Parco Naturale del Sacro Monte di Crea

The hill of Crea rises among the vineyards of the Monferrato casalese to an elevation of 455 metres, high enough to open a view over the Po plain and, on clear days, the arc of the Alps. On this rise, which belongs to the diocese of Casale Monferrato, stands one of the twenty-four Sacri Monti (Sacred Mountains) of Piedmont and Lombardy inscribed in 2003 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is also, within the network, among the least visited: a condition that preserves something hard to quantify but immediately perceptible to anyone walking its paths out of season or in the early morning hours.

The Parco Naturale del Sacro Monte di Crea (Sacro Monte di Crea Nature Park) protects the hill and the woodland that covers it, a mantle of oaks, hornbeams and black locusts that accompanies the entire devotional route. Along this path are arranged twenty-three votive chapels, built between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, each housing sculptural groups and frescoes illustrating episodes from the life of the Virgin. The main sanctuary, dedicated to the Madonna di Crea, preserves a tradition of worship that, according to local memory, dates back at least to the fourth century, though the present structures belong to later layers of building. The chapels do not form a rigid sequence but settle into the wood with a logic that blends devotion and landscape, letting the vegetation take part in the composition of the spaces.

Trail 701, which loops around the hill, allows visitors to move through this alternation of minor architecture and nature without ever losing the thread of the route. Light filters differently depending on the hour and the season: in autumn the undergrowth changes colour while the surrounding vineyards are harvested, and the distance between one chapel and the next becomes an interval of silence rather than an empty pause. In spring the wood opens more generously and the views over the plain multiply at the panoramic clearings that line the path.

Serralunga di Crea, the municipality that hosts the site, has a population of a few hundred and has not built up any significant tourist infrastructure around the sanctuary. This keeps the place in an intimate dimension, where the only background sound is often the wind among the oaks or, on feast Sundays, the passing of a pilgrim or two. Those who arrive hoping for solitude find, in most cases, exactly what they are looking for.
