Val Falcina

In the heart of the Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi (Belluno Dolomites National Park), the Val Falcina opens up as a V-shaped river-torrent incision, carved over time by the force of water into the Dolomia Principale (Main Dolomite rock formation). We are in the municipality of Sospirolo, in the province of Belluno, in that portion of the pre-Alpine Veneto that belongs to the Valle del Mis — a system of valleys, lakes and watercourses that unfolds beneath the Dolomite peaks without sharing their fame. Mel, the seat of the municipality of Lentiai, marks the southern edge of this territory, while to the north the landscape narrows and rises, dominated by rock faces and dense woods.

The valley's geomorphology tells a long story. The Dolomia Principale is a sedimentary rock of Triassic origin, and the torrent that carved the Val Falcina has sculpted its walls with millimetric precision, leaving behind a miniature canyon that alternates shaded narrows with small openings where light filters through the treetops. The signposted loop trail within the park measures about four kilometres and takes a couple of hours to complete. Along the way, signs and information panels guide walkers through the landscape, flora and local fauna — an educational framework that makes the trail suitable even for those unfamiliar with the alpine environment.

Storm Vaia, which in October 2018 felled millions of trees across the eastern Alpine arc, has left visible traces here too. Some stretches of woodland still bear the marks of that night, with fallen trunks and clearings where once there was unbroken cover. The trail has since reopened, and those marks are now part of the landscape, testimony to an event that reshaped significant portions of the forests around Belluno.

The Val Falcina belongs to a wider natural system that includes the Lago del Mis, the cascate della Soffia (Soffia waterfalls) and the Cadini del Brenton — rock and water formations that punctuate the Valle del Mis, each with its own distinct character. The Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi, established in 1990, protects this territory, keeping human pressure low compared with the more frequented circuits of the Dolomite valleys. Anyone walking the Val Falcina on a weekday morning is unlikely to meet more than a handful of other hikers — a condition that has become rare in the Dolomites.
