Riserva Naturale del Mont Mars e Val Chalamy

The Val Chalamy opens up in eastern Valle d'Aosta as a corridor of rock and vegetation rising from the municipality of Champdepraz toward the ridges that separate the region from the Valle del Lys. Almost entirely contained within the boundaries of the Riserva Naturale del Mont Mars (Mont Mars Nature Reserve), this side valley of the Dora Baltea holds a set of environments that are rarely found so concentrated and so little altered at the alpine elevations of the region.

The forest landscape that accompanies the first stretches of ascent is dominated by mountain pine and Scots pine, with larch and beech alternating according to exposure and altitude. Higher up, the tree cover thins out and gives way to high-altitude grasslands, where ibex and chamois roam the slopes with a familiarity that only takes hold where human pressure has remained limited over time. These are not occasional sightings: the reserve represents one of the most stable habitats for these species in eastern Valle d'Aosta.

What sets the Val Chalamy apart from many other alpine valleys is the presence of peat bogs and high-altitude wetlands, environments that struggle to survive in the mountains and that here retain an intact ecological structure. Alpine peat bogs are slow systems, built up over centuries of organic accumulation, and their preservation depends on the absence of the kind of disturbance that has already compromised similar ecosystems elsewhere. Add to these several alpine lakes scattered along the route toward the higher elevations, mirrors of water that reflect the rocky ridges of the Mont Mars and complete a sequence of environments hard to replicate elsewhere in the same valley.

The reserve occupies a territory that, despite being formally protected, remains off the more frequented circuits of Valle d'Aosta. Champdepraz is neither Courmayeur nor Cogne, and the Val Chalamy does not compete with the destinations that have built their fame on decades of promotion. This relative marginality has had, paradoxically, a conservative effect: natural processes here proceed with an autonomy that has become difficult to observe in the more visited valleys.
