A small museum in the village of Donnas devoted to the history of heroic viticulture on steeply sloping land, with historic tools still in use. It documents a niche agricultural tradition that endures in demanding conditions.
Donnas lies in the Bassa Valle d'Aosta (Lower Aosta Valley), a few kilometres from the Forte di Bard, where the Dora Baltea river narrows the valley floor and rocky slopes rise steeply toward sun-facing hillsides. Here the vine grows on terraces built through centuries of hard labour, in conditions that elsewhere would have discouraged any stable cultivation. The winegrowing landscape of Donnas belongs to what is defined as heroic viticulture: gradients exceeding thirty per cent, terrain too difficult to mechanise, work almost entirely entrusted to human hands.
The Museo della Vite e del Vino (Museum of the Vine and Wine) is housed in the cellars of the "Anna Caterina Selve" nursery school, a building commissioned by commendatore Federico Selve in honour of his mother, for the benefit of the local community. The cellars retain a brick vaulted ceiling that speaks for itself of the building solidity of the period. From 1971 to 1976, these same spaces housed the headquarters of the Caves Coopératives de Donnas, the cooperative that secured for the local wine the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata (Controlled Designation of Origin) in the Aosta Valley — a recognition that marked the entry of a mountain production into Italy's official system of protections.
Inside the museum are preserved the traditional tools used in vine cultivation: implements that in many cases belong not only to memory but remain in use in the terraced vineyards of the area. This continuity between document and living practice is perhaps what sets the museum apart from a mere ethnographic collection. The objects on display do not illustrate a vanished craft, but describe gestures still performed every season on the same slopes.
The grape variety grown in Donnas is Nebbiolo, known locally as Picotener. The wine that results — Donnas DOC — is produced in limited quantities, proportionate to the difficulty of the terrain and the artisanal scale of the work. This scarcity is not a commercial constraint but a direct consequence of the site's morphology: every bottle carries within it the exact measure of effort required to obtain it.
The museum works as a gateway to a broader reading of the surrounding landscape. Those who walk the paths among the terraced vineyards of Donnas recognise in the dry-stone walls and low pergolas the same logic found in the tools preserved in the cellars: solutions refined over time to adapt an agricultural practice to an environment that offers nothing for free. Alpine heroic viticulture is not a promotional formula, but the precise description of a relationship between people and territory that in Donnas has left visible, measurable traces.
