What are we looking for here?
In this category the word «artisan» creates more confusion than it settles. In Italy it is an administrative status: it describes the size of the business and the owner's part in production, and it is obtained by filing a notice with the chamber of commerce. Millions of businesses hold it lawfully. It says nothing about how the work is done.
What sets a workshop apart is easier to verify than to recount. How many operations stay in house and how many are put out. How long a piece takes, and why. Whether there are tools built for that work or only bought from a catalogue. Whether beside someone who knows the trade there is someone learning it. Half an hour in the workshop is enough to see it, and there is no other way.
Then there is something Italian that counts here more than elsewhere. The knowledge we recognise almost never belongs to one business alone. Cremonese violin making, the glass of Murano, the ceramics of a town of ancient tradition are collective inheritances. No workshop can claim them as its own. It can, however, show that it is part of them.
Which businesses fall into this category?
Style and Craft covers the businesses that make objects with a substantial element of design or handwork: bespoke tailoring and shirtmaking, shoemaking and leather goods, goldsmithing and jewellery, ceramics and art glass, furniture and fitted interiors, weaving and embroidery, violin making and musical instruments, restoration, bookbinding and fine printing, cutlery, upholstery, fashion and accessories, design studios with production of their own.
The doubtful cases, and how we settle them
- Workshop that produces food
- Producers. Food processing has means of verification of its own, made of designations, control bodies and specifications. It is assessed by that criterion.
- Shop selling craft products made by others
- Outside the perimeter as craft. Choosing what one sells is a legitimate trade but a different one: whoever does not produce does not answer for the making.
- Design studio without production
- Services, if the work stops at the design and is done to commission. Style and Craft if the design reaches the finished object, made in house or in a supply chain the studio governs and declares.
- Restoration of protected cultural property
- Style and Craft, with the caveat that entry in the ministerial list of restorers is a licence to practise, not a merit.
- Business that assembles imported components
- We assess it for what it does. Assembly is work, but it does not satisfy the checks on making in house. We do not want to exclude it: we want to avoid calling assembly craft.
What do we look at?
Who awarded it before we did
This is the most fragmented landscape in Italy. Regional marks of craft excellence exist in many regions and in none of them with the same criteria. The title of Maestro Artigiano is awarded by the regions, with thresholds running from five to fifteen years of experience. Sector marks work well but hold for one territory only. Few titles remain comparable on a national scale: the registers of historic businesses and historic trade marks, the ministerial list of restorers, the Compasso d'Oro.
What its customers say
Weak by nature, and not through any fault of the workshops. Those who work to commission have few customers and almost none of them writes a public review. Those who sell through shops never meet the buyer. We read what there is, giving weight to recurrence rather than to number.
What it works with, and how
This is the part that weighs the most. Which stages stay in the workshop. Where hides, woods, yarns, metals and clays come from, and whether the workshop can account for their provenance. How long a piece takes. Whether there are moulds or tools made to measure. Whether the work is done to commission. Whether the workshop repairs what it has made even ten years later.
How long it has been there, and how it stands with its own place
How many years the workshop has been working and whether the trade has changed hands. Whether it belongs to a documented tradition of the place. Whether there are apprentices. Whether it practises techniques the market no longer pays for. Here too we ask for a date, a register, a pupil with a name: much is written about «knowing how», and little of it is verified.
We look at a business when the evidence gathered covers at least two of the four axes, and at least one piece of that evidence comes from a source outside the business's own account of itself: an outside body, the public of its customers, one of our scouts on the ground, our editors. Evidence is a necessary condition and not a sufficient one: the assessment remains an editorial one.
Which recognitions do we take into account?
None of these titles is required to join the network. They are the places where we go and look, not a list of requirements.
Institutional recognitions and registers
The few with a searchable national register. They are also the only ones comparable between a Tuscan business and a Sicilian one.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Impresa Storica d'Italia | Unioncamere | Public, searchable national register. A hundred years of unbroken activity in the same trade. |
| Marchio Storico di Interesse Nazionale | Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi | Special public register. A threshold of fifty years of registration or continuous use: the title belongs to the trade mark, not to the business. |
| Marchio di Ceramica Artistica e Tradizionale e Ceramica di Qualitàreassigned every year | Municipalities of ancient ceramic tradition, under national law | Municipal and chamber of commerce registers of the ceramic towns. It protects the historic shapes, decorations and techniques of an area: there is no «DOP for ceramics». |
| Marchio Vetro Artistico Muranoreassigned every year | Region of Veneto, with supervision by the consortium | Published list of licensees. Substantive requirement: production on the island. Take care not to confuse the licensed producer with the authorised retailer. |
| Regional marks of craft excellencereassigned every year | Regions | Regional lists, uneven in form and in severity. Not comparable with one another: they must always be cited with the Region and the year. |
| Recognised Bottega Scuolareassigned every year | Regions | Regional registers. It recognises the workshop as a place where the trade is handed on: it is one of the few titles that certifies teaching. |
| Geographical indication for craft and industrial products | Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi, then the European office | European register of geographical indications. A new instrument: the first Italian designations are in the course of registration, and until it is complete one does not write «registered». |
Memberships and protection consortia
Memberships with requirements, almost always territorial. They say that a workshop is part of a community of practice that has given itself rules.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Member of the Liuteria Cremonese consortiumreassigned every year | Consorzio Liutai Antonio Stradivari | Public list of members. It includes the certificate of guarantee for the instrument, which attests that it was made in a member workshop. |
| Member of the Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale consortiumreassigned every year | The consortium of the same name | List of member tanneries. It concerns the tannery: the leather worker who buys the hide may use the label only on the terms of the specification. |
| Member of Promovetro Muranoreassigned every year | Consorzio Promovetro | List of members. To be kept distinct from the licence for the regional mark: they are two different things and they do not coincide. |
| Presence in the Homo Faber Guide | Michelangelo Foundation | Public searchable platform. It is a curatorial selection with no published criteria: it counts as a signal, not as a certification. |
Awards and design selections
They almost always reward an object and an edition, not the company as such. A business with an award from 1979 is not «awarded in 2026».
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Compasso d'Oro ADI | Associazione per il Disegno Industriale | Historic collection and roll of honour at the association's museum. The award belongs to the product, held jointly by the company and the designer. |
| Selection in the ADI Design Indexreassigned every year | Associazione per il Disegno Industriale | Yearbook of the year. It is the shortlist the Compasso d'Oro draws on: being listed is not having won. |
Personal titles and honours
They belong to the artisan, not to the workshop. In this family they are the most telling part after the making itself, because the trade is in someone's hands.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Maestro d'Arte e Mestiere | Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte | Roll of recipients by edition, every two years. A private recognition of high standing, with no legal effect: it is not the equivalent of the regional Maestro Artigiano. |
| Maestro Artigiano | Regions | Regional registers and lists, with no single national register. Thresholds run from five to fifteen years of experience according to the Region, with an examination in some: two Maestri from different Regions are not equivalent. |
| Restorer of cultural property entered in the list | Ministry of Culture | Single public list on the portal of cultural heritage professionals. It is a licence to work on protected property, not a merit. |
| Compasso d'Oro alla Carriera | Associazione per il Disegno Industriale | Archive of the award. Distinct from the Compasso d'Oro given to the product. |
| Honours of the Republic and Cavaliere del Lavoro | President of the Italian Republic | Public database of the Quirinale, the seat of the Italian head of state, searchable by name. |
Titles of the product and of the heritage
They belong to the object or to a collective body of knowledge. No workshop can claim them as its own, but it can show that it is part of them.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of authenticity of vegetable-tanned leather | Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale | Sequential identification number verifiable on the website, piece by piece. It is one of the rare Italian cases of verification of the single article. It attests the tanning, not the making of the finished product. |
| UNESCO intangible cultural heritage | UNESCO, on the nomination of the State | Public representative list. It concerns the knowledge of a community — Cremonese violin making, Venetian glass beads — and never a single business: no artisan is «UNESCO certified». |
And if it holds no recognition at all?
Many businesses that deserve a place in the network have never asked anyone for an award. For them we look at these things, and each one says where we know it from.
| What | What it shows | How we check it | Who tells us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operations in house | How many stages stay in the workshop and how many are put out | Visit with a survey of the production cycle | Scout; editors |
| Origin of the material | Hides, woods, yarns, metals and clays have a declared provenance | Invoices, labels, declaration verified on site | Scout |
| Work made to measure | The object is born on the person or on the commission, not on a size | Direct evidence of the measuring or design process | Scout; editors |
| Equipment built for the trade | Moulds, forms and tools made to measure for that work | Photographic evidence in the workshop | Scout |
| Repair years later | The workshop answers for what it has made even after a long time | Declared service and documented cases | Scout; the public of its customers |
| Handing on the trade | Someone is learning beside someone who knows | Presence of apprentices, recognition as a bottega scuola, documented training activity | Outside body; scout |
| Technique of the place | A way of working tied to a place and to a documented tradition is practised | Comparison with the technical literature and the specifications of the area | Editors |
| Year of foundation | Historical continuity of the business | Date of entry in the business register | Outside body |
| Continuity of management | The trade has been handed on, not just the sign over the door | Chamber of commerce extract and documented account of the handover | Outside body; editors |
What is not enough?
These things, on their own, bring nobody in. Some of them are respectable and stay respectable: they simply do not tell us what we are looking for.
- Registration in the register of craft businesses. It is an administrative requirement describing the size of the business and the part played by the owner. There is no scrutiny of quality, and there is no national «Artisan» mark of merit in Italy.
- The word «artisanal». It is not protected as an adjective of quality and it commits to nothing. It is written in three seconds.
- The goldsmith's identification mark. It is a legal obligation for anyone who makes or imports objects in precious metal: it identifies who answers for them, like a number plate.
- The legal fineness of the metal. «Silver 925» is the compulsory declaration of the fine content. It is a figure that is owed, not a merit.
- The wording «Made in Italy». It is a customs rule of origin that follows the last substantial transformation, far less demanding than the public believes. It is not obtained and it has no register.
- Membership of a trade association. It is representation by subscription, with no requirement of merit on entry.
- An award from thirty years ago. A recognition given to an object stays tied to that object and that edition. It must always be cited with the year.
- Belonging to a famous district. Having a workshop in a celebrated district is a location, not a merit. Collective knowledge cannot be claimed as one's own.
- A high price. It is not an indicator of making. The cost of an object also depends on positioning, on distribution and on the brand.
- Photographs of the workshop. A well-photographed workbench does not say which stages actually take place on it. For that one has to go there.
How does a business get into the network?
Workshops reach us in three ways. Our scouts point them out to us: they go into the workshops where we are not. We find them ourselves, searching among registers, sector marks and regional rolls. Or they put themselves forward.
In this category the evidence of someone who goes on site is worth more than any document, because no document says which operations stay in house. We search the archives for what can be searched, and for the rest we go and look.
We reread this document once a year. We check that the recognitions we name still exist, that they have not changed name or awarding body, and that no new ones have appeared.
The Italian version of this document is the authoritative one. Where a translation and the Italian text differ, the Italian text prevails.
