What are we looking for here?
In no other category is the distance between what can be seen and what counts so wide. A gym is judged by its machines, a spa by its lighting, a practice by its floor. All of these are things that are bought. What cannot be bought is whoever lays hands on you: what they studied, which qualification they hold, which register they are entered in, how much they keep up to date.
It is also the category in which the greatest number of worthless titles circulate. Certificates from private schools with names that look official, foreign acronyms that license nothing in Italy, weekend courses called certifications. Telling them apart from real licences is not pedantry. A massage given by someone without a qualification, on a back with a clinical problem, does harm.
That is why here we start from the people. We look at who works there, what they studied, where they are registered and whether that registration can be checked. Then we look at the rest: the premises, safety, continuity of management, the relationship with the local sporting community. The order is not accidental.
Which businesses fall into this category?
Wellbeing and Sport covers the businesses that deal with the body, with movement and with its care: gyms and fitness centres, swimming pools, sports centres and clubs, dance schools, spas, thermal baths and spa establishments, beauty salons, hairdressers and barbers, physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices, nutrition practices, yoga and pilates centres, ski schools, mountain guides, diving centres.
The doubtful cases, and how we settle them
- Spa inside a hotel
- It belongs to hospitality when it is reserved for guests. If it is open also to those who do not sleep there, with a price list and bookings of its own, it is assessed here. In that case we check the qualifications of the staff as we would for any other centre.
- Medical practice or outpatient clinic
- Outside the perimeter. Authorised and accredited healthcare has verification machinery of its own, public and binding, which is not ours. Practices of the non-hospital health professions do fall within it when the work is mainly rehabilitative or preventive.
- Amateur sports club without premises of its own
- Inside the perimeter: here the activity is the sporting organisation and its technical quality, not the place. The indicators tied to the premises do not apply and must not be demanded.
- Shop selling supplements or equipment
- Outside the perimeter as Wellbeing and Sport: it is retail. It may fall under Services if the prevailing work is qualified advice.
- Thermal spa establishment
- Inside the perimeter, with one particularity: the thermal water is recognised by the Ministry of Health and the establishment is authorised by the Region. These are requirements of law, not merits, and they are to be treated as such.
What do we look at?
Who awarded it before we did
Here almost all the checking goes through the people: licensing degrees, consultable registers, federal technical qualifications. Severity is needed, because alongside the real titles there circulate certificates that imitate their names without having their value. The rule we apply is simple: what counts is what stands in a public register or roll and can be checked by typing a surname.
What its customers say
The reviews that are worth something are those that name a person and a result: a recovery, an improvement, a course followed for months. Those that talk about changing rooms and opening hours say little. We look at constancy over time and at the presence of customers who stay for years.
What it works with, and how
Here the raw material is competence. We look at the academic title of whoever gives the treatment and their entry in the register where a register exists, how many qualified people there are for the number who attend, whether continuing training is documented, whether someone is assessed before being made to move, which methods are applied, and whether the defibrillator is there together with someone trained to use it.
How long it has been there, and how it stands with its own place
How many years under the same management, and above all whether the professionals stay: in this sector turnover is very high and staying says a great deal. Then the work with the community, which means youth teams, classes for the elderly, activity for people with disabilities, the training of new instructors.
We look at a business when the evidence gathered covers at least two of the four axes, and at least one piece of that evidence comes from a source outside the business's own account of itself: an outside body, the public of its customers, one of our scouts on the ground, our editors. Evidence is a necessary condition and not a sufficient one: the assessment remains an editorial one.
Which recognitions do we take into account?
None of these titles is required to join the network. They are the places where we go and look, not a list of requirements.
Health titles and compulsory registers
They are checked by typing a surname into a public register, and that makes them the soundest of all. They are compulsory in order to practise, so having them sets no one apart. Not having them does, and it is the most useful thing we can tell you.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Degree in Physiotherapy and entry in the register | Territorial associations of physiotherapists, with the national federation | Public professional register, searchable by surname and province. Since 2021 the degree carries the licence; whoever practises without registration commits the offence of unlawful practice. |
| Entry in the register of dietitians | Associations of the technical, rehabilitation and prevention health professions | Searchable public register. The dietitian draws up and applies diets on prescription or independently, according to the professional profile. |
| Entry in the register of biologists, for practice as a nutrition biologist | Regional associations of biologists | Searchable public register. It is the only title that licenses someone who is neither a doctor nor a dietitian to draw up eating plans independently. |
| Specialisation in Sport and Exercise Medicine | Universities, schools of specialisation | Register of doctors with the specialisation noted. Four years after the degree in medicine. |
| Osteopath | Health profession established by law, with a roll held by the associations of the health professions | Professional roll. The profession has been established and the university course defined: check the registration, not the diploma of a private school alone. |
| Special roll of massage physiotherapists | Associations of the health professions | Special closed roll. It concerns titles obtained by precise dates: outside those, the title does not license. |
Degrees and qualifications of movement
Real and verifiable titles which in many cases are not compulsory in order to practise. That is precisely why they set people apart: whoever holds them chose to obtain them.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Degree in Sport and Exercise Sciences | Universities | University title verifiable with the university. It is the basis of the movement professions: the three-year L-22 and the master's LM-67, LM-68 and LM-47. |
| Master's in Preventive and Adapted Physical Activity | Universities | University title. It is the specialisation that qualifies work with those who have pathologies, advanced age or disabilities: in wellbeing it is the most telling one. |
| Qualification of kinesiologist | Recognition by law for whoever holds the degree | It follows from the academic title: there is no body that issues a separate certificate. Be wary of anyone producing a «kinesiologist's certificate». |
| Federal technical qualificationreassigned every year | National sports federations and recognised sport promotion bodies | National register of amateur sports activities, section of members with the technical category. The levels follow the national system of qualifications. |
| Lifeguard certificatereassigned every year | Federazione Italiana Nuoto, lifesaving section, and other authorised bodies | Certificate with an expiry date and an obligation of periodic refreshment. Compulsory for supervision at the poolside. |
| Ski instructor entered in the register | Regional colleges of ski instructors, under the national framework law | Regional professional register. It is a profession reserved by law: without registration, teaching is unlawful. |
| Mountain guide entered in the register | Regional colleges of mountain guides | Regional professional register. As above: a profession reserved by law. |
| Beautician's licence | Regions, with a licensing examination | Regional professional qualification with a course and an examining board. It is compulsory in order to practise. |
| Hairdresser's licence | Regions, with a licensing examination | Regional professional qualification. Compulsory in order to practise. |
| Academic diploma in dance | Accademia Nazionale di Danza and institutions of higher artistic education | Academic title verifiable with the institution. In the teaching of dance, where no register exists, it is the title that sets people apart the most. |
| Personal trainer certification under the UNI standardreassigned every year | Accredited bodies for the certification of persons | Register of the accredited body. Not to be confused with the diplomas of private schools: here there is an outside body that assesses. |
Recognitions and certifications of the business
They concern the premises, the organisation and safety. Some are compulsory and are to be read as such.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Entry in the national register of amateur sports activitiesreassigned every year | Department for Sport | Consultable public register. It is the precondition for the tax benefits of amateur sport: compulsory for those who enjoy them, not a merit. |
| Affiliation to a national sports federation or to a sport promotion bodyreassigned every year | Federations and bodies recognised by the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale | Lists of affiliates kept by each federation or body. It signals inclusion in the official sporting system. |
| Recognition by the Comitato Italiano Paralimpicoreassigned every year | Comitato Italiano Paralimpico | Lists of the Committee. It attests sporting activity for people with disabilities within the official system. |
| Approval of the facility by the competent federationreassigned every year | National sports federations | Federal lists of approved facilities. Necessary in order to host official competitions. |
| UNI EN 17229 certification for fitness centresreassigned every year | Accredited certification bodies | Accredia database of certifications. European standard on the facilities and operating services of fitness centres. |
| EuropeSpa certificationreassigned every year | European Spas Association | Public list of certified establishments. It distinguishes the medical version from the wellness one. |
| Accreditation with the health service for thermal treatmentsreassigned every year | Regions | Regional lists of accredited establishments. It concerns only thermal establishments with recognised water. |
| Certified management systemsreassigned every year | Accredited certification bodies | Accredia database. Quality, safety at work and environment: verifiable in the register under the name of the business. |
| Impresa Storica d'Italia | Unioncamere | Public, searchable national register. A hundred years of continuity in the same trade. |
Certified methods and disciplines
They are methods owned by outside bodies, which certify the teacher and sometimes the centre. They say that a defined protocol is applied, not that it is applied well.
| Title | Who awards it | Where it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Feldenkrais Method | Italian association of teachers of the method, under an international trade mark | List of certified teachers. The mark is registered: using it without certification is an abuse. |
| McKenzie Method | McKenzie Institute International | International register of credentialed clinicians. A method with a scientific literature of its own in the musculoskeletal field. |
| Pilates method certifications | International private bodies with a registered trade mark | Registers of the bodies that own the methods. The word «pilates» is not protected: the individual methods are. |
| Affiliation to licensed fitness programmesreassigned every year | Owners of the international formats | Lists of affiliated centres. It is a commercial licence with training requirements for the instructors. |
And if it holds no recognition at all?
Many businesses that deserve a place in the network have never asked anyone for an award. For them we look at these things, and each one says where we know it from.
| What | What it shows | How we check it | Who tells us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staff entered in a professional register | Whoever gives health or reserved treatments is registered and verifiable | Search by surname in the public professional register | Outside body |
| Academic titles of the staff | Degrees and specialisations of those who work on the body | Verification of the title with the university or the institution that issued it | Outside body; editors |
| Adapted specialisation | Specific competence for those with pathologies, advanced age or disabilities | Master's in preventive and adapted physical activity, or a documented equivalent title | Outside body |
| Ratio of qualified staff to users | The qualified professionals are enough for the number who attend | Declared staffing and evidence on site at a peak hour | Scout |
| Initial assessment | Before making someone move, their condition is assessed | Documented protocol and direct evidence | Scout; editors |
| Documented continuing training | Keeping up to date is real and not merely declared | Training credits, recent certificates, attendance at verifiable courses | Outside body; editors |
| Defibrillator and trained staff | Safety is not left to chance | Presence of the registered device and training certificates within their validity | Scout |
| Staying of the professionals | Those who work there stay, in a sector where turnover is very high | Staffing two years apart, recurrence of names in the reviews | The public of its customers; editors |
| Work with the community | The centre does something for the area beyond its own price list | Youth teams, classes for the elderly, adapted activity, documented partnerships | Scout; editors |
| Continuity of approval | Approval holds over time, it is not a spike | Distribution of the reviews over at least twenty-four months | The public of its customers |
What is not enough?
These things, on their own, bring nobody in. Some of them are respectable and stay respectable: they simply do not tell us what we are looking for.
- The equipment. Machines are bought and show up well in photographs. Whoever knows how to make them work does not, and that is the point.
- The floor area. A large centre is not a better centre. Often it only means more people for each qualified professional.
- The compulsory licences. The physiotherapist's register, the beautician's licence, the lifeguard's certificate are requirements for practising. Having them sets no one apart: not having them makes the business unlawful.
- Certificates from private schools. A diploma of «operator» issued by a private school, however long the course, is not a licence and authorises nothing that was not already permitted. It must be called by its name, not hidden behind an acronym.
- International acronyms. Many foreign certifications have no legal standing in Italy. They count as training, not as a licensing title, and they must be presented that way.
- The quality certificate of professional associations. The attestation issued by an association of unregulated professions certifies adherence to the association's standards. It is not a professional register and it does not license: confusing the two is the commonest misunderstanding in the sector.
- Entry in the register of amateur sports activities. It is the precondition for the tax benefits, and therefore an obligation of those who enjoy them. It is not a technical assessment.
- The number of classes on the timetable. It measures the breadth of what is offered, not the competence of those who deliver it.
- The photographs of the spa. In beauty and wellbeing the image is the product of communication, not of the service.
- The sporting results of the registered athletes. They count when they are continuous and tied to the technical work of the club. A single champion may have arrived already made.
How does a business get into the network?
Businesses reach us in three ways. Our scouts point them out to us: they go to the gyms and studios where we are not, and they tell us how many qualified people they saw at a peak hour. We find them ourselves, and here we start from the professional registers. Or they put themselves forward.
The first check is always the same and we make it for everyone: we take the names of those who give the reserved treatments and we look them up in the register. It takes a few minutes and says more than any brochure. Then we look at the rest, and we go and see what can only be seen by going.
We reread this document once a year. Here the rules change often, so we check that the registers and titles we name still exist in the same form and that no new recognised professions have appeared.
The Italian version of this document is the authoritative one. Where a translation and the Italian text differ, the Italian text prevails.
