Oasi Naturale di Torre Guaceto

On the Adriatic stretch of the province of Brindisi, between Carovigno and San Vito dei Normanni, lies one of the few remaining sections of Puglia's coast to have escaped the building pressure of recent decades. The Riserva Naturale Statale di Torre Guaceto (State Nature Reserve) covers roughly 1,114 hectares of land and adjoins a marine protected area of over 2,200 hectares, established in 1991. Its perimeter takes in distinct, adjoining environments: Mediterranean scrubland with mastic, phillyrea and prickly juniper; the wetlands behind the dunes, a resting habitat for numerous species of migratory birds; the coastal dunes with their pioneer vegetation; and the seabed, where Posidonia oceanica meadows form one of the most productive ecosystems in the Mediterranean.

Management of the area is entrusted jointly to WWF Italia and the Consorzio di Gestione di Torre Guaceto (Management Consortium), a body bringing together the municipalities of Carovigno and San Vito dei Normanni. This administrative model has made it possible to regulate access through visitor caps and guided routes, limiting human impact on habitats that elsewhere along the Brindisi coast have been irreversibly compromised. Fishing, permitted only with traditional methods and within designated zones, has over time drawn local cooperatives into a process of conversion toward practices compatible with conservation.

At the heart of the coastal landscape stands the Aragonese tower that gives the whole area its name. Built in the 16th century as part of the Kingdom of Naples' defensive system against Ottoman raids, the square structure dominates the low promontory separating the open sea from the inland wetland. Its presence recalls that this stretch of coast was already, centuries ago, a point of strategic observation: the line of sight between the coastal towers of Salento and the Adriatic Murgia allowed warning signals to be relayed across hundreds of kilometres.

What sets Torre Guaceto apart among Italy's protected areas is the coexistence, within a relatively contained space, of ecological gradients that elsewhere are separated by considerable distances. From the seabed to the dune, from the wetland to the scrubland, each band hosts specific, interdependent biological communities. The waters of the marine reserve, thanks to the ban on trawling in force since the protected area was established, have seen fish populations recover over time, as documented by periodic scientific monitoring. This recovery has also had positive effects on neighbouring fishing grounds, in keeping with the reserve effect that marine ecologists observe in similar contexts across the Mediterranean.
