A unique Christmas tradition staging a living nativity aboard historic boats moored in the Leonardo-designed porto-canale, weaving together popular faith and the seafaring culture of Romagna.
The porto-canale of Cesenatico was laid out in 1502 to a design attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, commissioned by Cesare Borgia to survey and reorganise the harbour system of the Romagna coast. That geometry of water — a straight channel cutting through the town and opening onto the Adriatic — has remained largely unchanged over the centuries, and today it is home to the historic vessels of the Museo della Marineria (Museum of Seafaring): bragozzo, trabaccolo, battana, bilancella, boats that once shaped the economy and daily life of fishermen on the upper Adriatic. It is on this stretch of water, and on these very hulls, that the Presepe della Marineria (Nativity of the Seafarers) takes shape every December.
The tradition began at Christmas in 1986. The idea was to place life-size nativity figures aboard the boats moored along the canal, staging the gospel scene not in conventional form but transposed into the world of Romagna's fishermen: the Holy Family surrounded not by shepherds and flocks but by nets, fishing gear, lowered sails — the whole material fabric of a community that lived by the sea. The figures, crafted by hand, occupy the decks and holds of the historic vessels, turning each hull into a self-contained tableau that contributes to a larger, choral narrative.
What sets this nativity apart from many other Christmas re-enactments is the coherence between vessel and vision. The boats are not stage sets built for the occasion: they are authentic pieces of Adriatic history, restored and preserved as ethnographic heritage. When the figures take their place aboard, the port does not put on a costume — it remains itself, and the overlap between the liturgical time of Christmas and the long memory of seafaring happens without any sense of contrivance. The display unfolds in the evening, when light reflected on the canal's water alters the way the hulls and figures are perceived, and Cesenatico's historic centre gathers around the port with the familiarity that belongs to established tradition, not to staged events.
In nearly forty years, the Presepe della Marineria has become a fixture of the cultural calendar along the Romagna coast, drawing visitors even from inland towns. Its strength lies not in spectacle but in the density of meaning it manages to hold together: popular devotion, the memory of a trade that shaped an entire coastal civilisation, and the care with which a community chooses to preserve both.
