Medieval town in the province of Varese known for its extraordinary concentration of fifteenth-century Tuscan art, commissioned by Cardinal Branda Castiglioni, who made it a cultural anomaly in the Lombard landscape.
In the heart of the province of Varese, along the Olona valley, stands a town that a royal decree of 1948 honoured with the title of città for artistic merit: Castiglione Olona, with around 7,400 inhabitants, called *Castion* in the Varesotto dialect. The urban layout still walked today dates largely from the fifteenth century, when Cardinal Branda Castiglioni — a diplomat of the Church, papal legate in Bohemia and Hungary, and a central figure at the Council of Constance — decided to turn his native town into a manifesto of Tuscan humanism transplanted onto Lombard soil. It was a deliberate and coherent cultural undertaking, not the result of scattered commissions: Castiglioni brought with him artists, architectural models and a precise idea of the city that had no precedent at these latitudes.
The heart of this transformation is the Collegiata (collegiate church) of Santi Stefano e Lorenzo, built on the summit of the hill overlooking the town. Inside, the frescoes commissioned from Masolino da Panicale — a Sienese painter active between Florence and Rome, and a collaborator of Masaccio — form one of the most intact pictorial cycles of the early Italian Renaissance. The stories of the Virgin and of Saint John the Baptist that decorate the adjoining Battistero (baptistery), painted between about 1435 and 1440, show a mastery of perspective and a chromatic quality that point directly back to the Florentine workshops. Next to the Collegiata stand the Palazzo dei Famigliari del Cardinal Branda, the Scolastica — today the town hall — and the Museo Branda Castiglioni, which brings together works and documents linked to the cardinal's patronage. Together they form a unified architectural complex, rare for its stylistic coherence and state of preservation.
The phrase "an island of Tuscany in Lombardy" has circulated for decades with uncertain attribution: some trace it to the writer Piero Chiara, others to Gabriele d'Annunzio, who is said to have recognised in the red terracotta of the façades and in the layout of the piazzas an echo of the central Italian Renaissance. Whatever its origin, the phrase captures something real: not only the presence of Tuscan craftsmen such as Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta, and Paolo Schiavo, but a conception of urban space — the hill, the piazza, the church in a dominant position — that stands clearly apart from the Lombard building tradition of the same period. Castiglione Olona is one of the very first examples of Renaissance town planning in Lombardy, and this chronological priority gives it a historical weight that goes beyond the aesthetic value of its individual buildings.
The town also preserves smaller structures that complete the picture: the Arco di Ponente and the Arco di Levante mark the entrances to the historic centre, the Ponte Medievale (medieval bridge) crosses the Olona, and Via Cavour retains the sequence of palazzi and courtyards that once framed fifteenth-century civic life. The Parco Sovracomunale Rile Tenore Olona wraps around the surrounding territory, keeping the landscape at a distance from twentieth-century building expansion. Anyone who walks the lanes of the historic centre on a weekday finds a quiet that the town's modest size makes structural, not occasional.
