Castelmuzio

Castelmuzio rises on a ridge of tufa a few kilometres from Trequanda, the municipality of which it is a hamlet, in that borderland between Val d'Orcia and the Sienese Valdichiana where the landscape shifts between crete and woods of downy oak. Over time the hill on which the village stands has yielded materials dating back to the Etruscan-Roman period, including the remains of a temple dedicated to the goddess Isis. The first written document naming it dates to 1213, when it appears as Castel-Mozzo, property of the Scialenga family of Asciano. From then on the village's history is a sequence of changing hands: in 1270 it passes to the Republic of Siena, then to the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala (hospital and pilgrims' hospice), then to Andrea Piccolomini in 1470, and finally to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany after the fall of the Republic in 1559. After Italian Unification it becomes a hamlet of Trequanda, and remains so.

The medieval urban layout has survived with rare coherence. One still enters through the original gate, its gangari (hinge sockets) and piombatoi (defensive openings for dropping projectiles) intact — elements that recall with material precision the defensive techniques of the period. The central square gathers within a few square metres the layered functions of different historical periods: Palazzo Fratini, which occupies the tower once seat of the local magistrate; the Spedale di San Giovanni Battista, which took in travellers and orphans; the seat of the Confraternita della SS. Trinità e di San Bernardino (confraternity of the Holy Trinity and Saint Bernardino), with an attached pharmacy and a small hospice for pilgrims. Residents still call the village simply "il Castello" (the castle), as if the official name were an administrative formality laid over an older identity.

What sets Castelmuzio apart from other villages in the same area is not only its architectural preservation, but a certain active care for its shared spaces. An initiative promoted by residents, local businesses and the Comune di Trequanda (Trequanda municipal council) has turned the belvedere into a furnished resting point with wrought-iron tables and armchairs, earning the village the informal title of "borgo salotto" (the village as a living room). This is not decoration for its own sake: it reflects a practice of active stewardship of the territory by those who live there, one that in this part of the Sienese countryside is interwoven with artisan traditions tied to the working of iron, stone and the raw materials of the land. The Ecomuseo Digitale Terre di Siena (digital ecomuseum of the Sienese lands), a project of the Musei Senesi (Sienese Museums network), has included Castelmuzio in its archive, documenting the landscape, place names and local history as intangible cultural heritage of the Val di Chiana territory.

The geographical setting helps define the character of the place. The Trove valley opens out beneath the walls, and the elevated position allows a reading of the surrounding landscape that is itself part of the experience of the village. Castelmuzio lacks the visibility of the better-known destinations of the Province of Siena, and this has preserved both its physical structure and the rhythm of life within it. The artisans and agricultural producers of the area work in a territory that the Ecomuseo classifies as the Sienese Val di Chiana, a district with its own distinct character set against the more celebrated Val d'Orcia, and one that retains a network of practical knowledge — from the working of tufa stone to traditional agricultural production — still recognisable in the fabric of the village and its immediate surroundings.
