Waterfalls hidden among the woods of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, reached on hikes through little-frequented areas. They stand as an example of the unexpected nature to be discovered along the region's less-travelled trails.
Forgaria nel Friuli is a municipality in the province of Udine that stretches between the Tagliamento river and the first outcrops of the Prealpi Carniche, in a stretch of territory where karst geology and surface hydrology coexist with a vegetal density that rarely reveals what it conceals. It is in this setting — woods of hornbeam and ash, damp slopes, small streams running down from the hills toward the valley floor — that the Cascate di Caprizi (Caprizi Waterfalls) are found, a water formation that does not appear on ordinary tourist maps and cannot be reached without following trails lacking consistent signage.
The territory of Forgaria is already known for the Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino, established to protect one of the last griffon vulture nesting sites in Italy, and for the Laghetti Pakar, small karst pools fed by springs. The Cascate di Caprizi belong to the same hydrogeological logic: water that emerges or gathers at altitude, finds a drop, and flows down it with a continuity that depends on season and rainfall. The name itself — Caprizi — draws on local toponymy, layered with Friulian terms that describe the landscape with a precision modern maps have partly lost.
The surrounding vegetation helps to isolate the site, acoustically and visually, from the rest of the wood. The sound of the water precedes the sight of it, and this sensory delay is a trait common to the lesser waterfalls of inland Friuli, where the tree cover is dense enough to soften the light and slow the perception of space. In spring, as snow melts at higher elevations, the flow increases noticeably; in summer it lessens but never disappears, keeping the rock damp and favouring the mosses and ferns that colonise its vertical surfaces.
This kind of environment — humid, shaded, with cold, oxygenated water — is among those in Friuli-Venezia Giulia that host animal species tied to water quality and microclimate stability. The Lataste's frog, an amphibian endemic to the Po Valley and the neighbouring hill country, classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, finds in the wetlands of inland Friuli some of its last remaining breeding grounds. The presence of intact habitats such as that of the Cascate di Caprizi forms part of a wider ecological network that the region protects through the Natura 2000 network and its regional nature reserves.
What sets the Cascate di Caprizi apart from other natural sites in the area is not the spectacle of the fall itself, but the coherence of its surroundings: a landscape that has undergone no significant alteration, where the human scale is small and the wood follows a logic of its own, independent of the occasional passage of those who cross it. Forgaria nel Friuli remains a municipality of just over a thousand inhabitants, and this demographic proportion is reflected in the extent to which the land has been left to itself, at least in its least accessible parts.
