Among the hills of Portaria, in the green heart of Umbria, a family-run farm has chosen to open its doors: hospitality, an educational farm and environmental sustainability coexist on the same stretch of land.
At four hundred and fifty metres above sea level, above the springs of San Gemini and at the entrance to the Roman site of Carsulae, the Umbrian hills open onto a landscape that changes with the seasons. From this window, the green of Portaria is never quite the same two mornings running.
Thirty hectares of countryside, more than fifty head of cattle and horses: Res Nova Il Colle is a farm passed down from generation to generation. Family management holds together the work of the land and the welcome of guests, without one coming at the expense of the other.
The four accommodation units, created from a recently renovated building, are heated seventy to eighty per cent by a solar thermal system. The six-kilowatt photovoltaic system produces fifteen thousand kilowatt-hours a year; the roof, made of FSC-certified, one hundred per cent recyclable materials, completes the circle of a deliberate choice.
A country home that generates almost all the energy it consumes, between Carsulae and the springs of San Gemini. The page tells the rest.
