In Ancona, where the city ends on the cliffs of the Passetto, a lift from the 1950s guards one of the most singular tables by the sea on the Adriatic. To go up is to enter a place where architecture, history and cooking look at each other through the same windows.
On the Adriatic that beats against the cliffs of the Passetto, there is an entrance few forget: that of the lift built in the 1950s, a symbol of the city of Ancona. Here, where rationalist architecture meets the salt of the sea air, L'Ascensore opened in 2020, turning a civic monument into a table by the sea.
The dining room's large windows frame the Adriatic panorama like living paintings: cliffs, waves, light that shifts with the hours. Above the tables, artisan fishing baskets converted into lamps bring the vocabulary of the sea into the room, while fine art photographs of the Passetto tell the history of the place on the walls.
The open kitchen works with raw materials from the Marche coastline. Among the stars of the menu are moscioli, wild mussels exclusive to this stretch of coast and a Slow Food presidium: an ingredient found nowhere else, cooked with the care of those who know the sea that produces it and the season that governs it.
