ospitalita — San Gregorio Da Sassola · Lazio
Among the hills that separate Tivoli from Palestrina, a farmhouse dating to 1100 watches over family olive groves cultivated without interruption for over a century. Il Torrino dei Gelsi has remained true to stone and earth: here, hospitality springs from a place that time has passed through without erasing.
From the farmhouse window, the eye sweeps across the hills of eastern Lazio with the same breadth that the first inhabitants of these walls must have known in the year 1100. The building, with its small tower (torrino), has reached us through conservative restorations that never gave way to convenience: tufa, stone, original bricks and roof tiles have all remained in place.
From the flowering balcony, the centuries-old mulberry trees (gelsi) that give the estate its name trace the line between the garden and the olive groves. They are the same trees that have accompanied the family since its founding, when Cesare Manni received, at the 1921 Industrial Congress, the Olio Purissimo e Finissimo (Purest and Finest Oil) award for the family's production.
The rooms and three apartments — two of which have a kitchenette, for a total of twelve beds — retain chestnut-beamed ceilings and handmade terracotta floors. Materials that do not imitate the past: they are the past, kept in place through a restoration that chose fidelity to the original as its only criterion.
A farmhouse that has produced, welcomed and handed down for over a century. The page recounts every detail of the hospitality and of Saxula olive oil.
