Ostuni, the White City, holds among the lanes of its historic centre one of the last workshops keeping the region's ancient ceramic tradition alive. On Via Cattedrale, just steps from the cathedral, Rocco Saponaro's workshop tells the story of Puglia through clay.
In the workshop on Via Cattedrale, every cycle begins with the choice of clay: Rocco Saponaro selects the material, prepares it, and shapes it by hand piece by piece. Firing in the kiln closes the process, giving each object colours and textures that no mass production could ever match.
For over twenty-five years the same hands have carried forward Ostuni's ancient ceramic knowledge, passed down through the centuries and still alive today in this workshop. Those who wish can commission custom pieces: Rocco makes personalised objects with the same skill reserved for standard production, with no compromise on quality.
The shelves hold a rotating array of decorated fischietti (whistles), colourful pumi, lamps, vases, trees of life, and kitchen accessories. Alongside the ceramics are works in olive wood: large pyrography-decorated chopping boards, napkin holders, and glass coasters, each made with the same artisan care that distinguishes every piece from Il Botteghino.
