The Val Canale is an alpine border corridor, where the mountains of Carnia draw close toward the Tarvisiano and the landscape carries the overlapping traces of different cultures. Here, in Ugovizza, the Cooperativa Agricoltori Valcanale (Valcanale Farmers' Cooperative) transforms the milk of its own members into the most important artisan dairy in the whole valley.
Born as an agricultural cooperative, the structure gathers the collective work of several families from the Val Canale, all engaged in processing mountain milk. It is the most important dairy enterprise in the area: a point of reference that holds together artisan production, alpine territorial identity and the shared memory of a border community, where Friuli, Austria and Slovenia have met for centuries.
The process follows artisan methods handed down over time: the cheeses take shape according to the culinary traditions of Malborghetto-Valbruna, a municipality that preserves one of the most layered alpine identities in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Alongside its dairy products, the caseificio (dairy) offers local Friulian crafts, bringing under one roof the knowledge of an entire border territory, where every product tells a story of belonging.
On the ageing shelves rest the wheels produced by the caseificio: artisan cheeses that condense the fresh milk of the Val Canale and the methods of a long-standing alpine tradition. At the shop on Via Pontebbana they can be bought directly, alongside artisan gelato — another product made in-house by the caseificio — and local Friulian craft pieces, all available for direct sale to the public.
