On the island of Sant'Antioco, where the winds of Sulcis shape a land of sand and salt, Sardus Pater has carried forward since 1949 a cooperative story that counts two hundred members and three hundred hectares of vineyards. At the heart of it all, Carignano: ancient, ungrafted, irreplaceable.
The winery's oldest rows sink their roots into sandy soils that shielded the vines from phylloxera: these are ungrafted plants, among the very few in Europe to preserve their original rootstock. At least fifty years old, they yield less than a kilogram of grapes per plant, carrying in each cluster the quiet concentration of decades on the island.
The island of Sant'Antioco holds a soil that rarely gives easily: low yields per hectare, constant winds, intense light all year round. Two hundred members work these hectares as a community sharing the same horizon for over seventy years, supplying grapes that the winery carefully selects and vinifies according to the Carignano del Sulcis DOC and Vermentino di Sardegna DOC standards.
Ageing gives rise to labels that have earned recognition in the leading industry guides: Is Arenas has received the Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, the Cinque Grappoli from AIS Bibenda, and the Grande Vino from Slow Wine. Alongside Carignano in its Nur, Arruga and Is Arenas Riserva versions, the winery also produces passito wines from Moscato and Nasco, grown on equally ungrafted vines.
