The place
Cantine Sardus Pater was founded in 1949 as a cooperative on the island of Sant'Antioco, in southwestern Sardinia. Two hundred members supply grapes from three hundred hectares of vineyards, where century-old Carignano vines planted on sandy soils predominate. These ungrafted vineyards, over fifty years old and with low yields per hectare, give rise to the winery's finest reds. Production ranges from Carignano del Sulcis DOC – offered in the Nur, Arruga and Is Arenas Riserva versions – to Vermentino di Sardegna, through to passito wines from Moscato and Nasco. Led by winemaker Paolo Pierantonzi, the winery carries on a winemaking tradition rooted in Roman times, when the ancient Sulci produced the prized Protropum.

Two hundred members cultivate three hundred hectares of vineyards on the island of Sant'Antioco, where sandy soils host Carignano vines at least fifty years old. The century-old, ungrafted vineyards represent the cooperative's most prized asset.
The winery vinifies the grapes supplied by its members according to the standards of the controlled designations of origin. Production centres on Carignano del Sulcis DOC and Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, alongside sweet passito wines from Moscato and Nasco.
The wines mature in the winery's barrels for the time required by each type. Reds from the century-old vineyards receive the longest ageing, to bring out their complexity and structure.
The wine shop at the winery offers direct sale of bottled and bulk wines. Shipping is available from six bottles upward.

Services and features
The denomination comes in the Nur, Arruga and Is Arenas Riserva versions. Is Arenas 2009 received Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, 5 Grappoli from AIS Bibenda 2014, and Grande Vino from Slow Wine. The century-old, ungrafted vineyards supply the grapes for the most structured reds.
Lugore is the winery's white wine offering, vinified from Vermentino grapes grown by members in the vineyards of Sulcis according to the denomination's standard.
Production includes passito wines from Moscato and Nasco, made by drying the grapes according to Sardinian winemaking tradition.
The winery organises guided tours with tastings of its wines paired with local cured meats, cheeses and bread. Visits are available by booking via email or telephone.
