Natural pools formed by the Galavesa stream near Erve, in the province of Lecco, at the foot of Mount Resegone, a destination for cooling off and immersing oneself in the Prealpine landscape.
The Galavesa stream descends the southern slope of Resegone with an irregular geometry, carving into the Prealpine limestone a series of successive basins that the water has smoothed over centuries until they became almost symmetrical. These are the Pozze di Erve (Erve's natural pools): not a lake, not a beach, but a sequence of natural basins fed by short, continuous waterfalls, where the current slows enough to allow a pause. The village of Erve, a municipality in the province of Lecco with just over two hundred residents, sits at roughly 450 metres above sea level and marks the access point to this stretch of the Galavesa via a path that opens through the valley-floor vegetation after just a few minutes' walk.
The geomorphological context explains much of what one perceives on site. Resegone — the jagged profile that Manzoni made famous in the opening pages of I Promessi Sposi, and which reaches 1875 metres at Punta Cermenati — channels rainwater down its slopes with a speed that the stream translates into a flow that varies but is almost never absent. The rock walls flanking the watercourse keep it in shade during the central hours of the day and help keep the water temperature noticeably below that of the surrounding air, even in the hottest months. It is this combination of factors — altitude, exposure, rock type — that makes the pools so busy in summer, with a regularity that in recent years has required managing access: on summer weekends, vehicle traffic to Erve has repeatedly been regulated through shuttle buses from Calolziocorte, a town also reachable by train on the line to Lecco.
The path leading from the village to the pools follows the Galavesa without significant elevation change in its first stretch, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors. Those who continue beyond the main pools find themselves on a route that climbs more steeply toward the upper reaches of Resegone, where the Capanna Monza stands — a refuge frequented by hikers completing the full loop — along with the remains of the Miniera della Passata, evidence of mining activity that once took place in these mountains. The pools thus function not as an isolated destination but as the threshold to a network of trails connecting the valley floor to the Prealpine ridge.
Erve's position relative to Lombardy's infrastructure network — under an hour from Milan with no motorway tolls, also reachable by public transport via Calolziocorte — has turned the pools into one of the most visited nearby destinations in the province of Lecco. This has brought with it a seasonal pressure that the site, given its nature, struggles to absorb at peak times. Outside the high summer season, the Galavesa regains its natural measure: the water flows over the rocks at the same rhythm, but the silence of the Prealpine woods once again becomes the dominant feature of the landscape.
