Lutherie and Goldsmithing in the Historic Centre of Genoa

In the historic centre of Genoa — among the most extensive in Europe in terms of continuous medieval urban fabric — the caruggi (the narrow, deep alleyways typical of Genoa's old town) are not merely a system of tight passageways connecting the port to the upper city. They are also the physical container for a transmission of knowledge that proceeds through direct lines, from master to apprentice, across centuries of manual practice. Here, where light enters at an angle and building façades nearly touch, workshops survive that work metal, build musical instruments, bind books and shape ceramics using techniques that remain substantially unchanged from those documented in the city's historical and artistic guides between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Genoese lutherie and the goldsmith's art of filigree represent two of the most recognisable strands of this heritage. Filigree — the working of gold and silver into extremely fine threads woven into geometric or floral patterns — has deep roots in Ligurian tradition, nourished over the centuries by the maritime trade that brought materials and influences from across the Mediterranean to Genoa. The luthier, for his part, works wood with tools whose form has not changed for centuries: gouges, rasps, animal-glue work surfaces, varnishes prepared according to orally transmitted recipes. The result is a musical instrument that carries within it the time required for its making, measurable in weeks or months of work on a single piece.

The City of Genoa, together with the Chamber of Commerce and the Soprintendenza per i Beni Storici e Artistici (the regional authority for historical and artistic heritage), has established a formal recognition for the city's historic workshops, identifying fourteen of them as custodians of a documentary and material legacy dating back at least to the nineteenth century. This survey is not merely an administrative act: it is an attempt to make visible what the very structure of the caruggi tends to conceal, since the workshops often open onto side alleys, without conspicuous signs, their windows displaying tools of the trade more than finished products.

Alongside lutherie and goldsmithing, wrought-iron forging and bookbinding complete a picture in which every craft demands years of apprenticeship before the hand acquires the necessary precision. Decorative stuccowork, applied to the interiors of the noble palaces of the Rolli — the system of patrician residences inscribed in 2006 on the UNESCO World Heritage list — represents a particular case: a skill that lives almost exclusively in relation to historic buildings, in the restoration and maintenance of surfaces that would otherwise be lost. The historic centre of Genoa thus functions as an ecosystem in which architecture and craftsmanship sustain one another, each a condition for the other's survival.
