Medieval core of Finale Ligure, in the hinterland of the province of Savona, a reference point for trekking, climbing and mountain biking thanks to its cliffs and trails through woods and canyons.
Finalborgo is the medieval hamlet of Finale Ligure, set in the hinterland of the province of Savona, just a few kilometres from the sea yet belonging, in character and morphology, to a world radically different from the coast. Enclosed by sixteenth-century walls still intact, with Porta Reale as its main gateway, it preserves the urban layout of the Marchesato dei Del Carretto, the family that made it their seat of power starting in the Middle Ages. The porticoes running through the inner streets, the noble palaces and the cloister of Santa Caterina — today home to the Museo Civico del Finale (Finale Civic Museum) — convey the measure of a centre that has never abandoned its original structure.
The territory surrounding the hamlet is limestone, shaped by millennia of erosion that produced cliffs, canyons and one of the most extensive cave systems in Liguria. This geological makeup has turned Finalborgo and its hinterland into one of Italy's benchmark destinations for sport climbing: the limestone walls rising around the Pora valley and along the cuts of Bric Pianarella offer routes of varying difficulty, drawing European climbers with steady seasonal frequency. This is no recent vocation: the area has featured on international climbing circuits for decades, with a network of equipped sectors stretching for kilometres through the hinterland.
The same geology that shaped the cliffs also traced the trails. The paths branching out from the hamlet cross woods of maritime pine and holm oak, climb limestone ridges and descend into canyons where light filters in obliquely even at midday. Mountain biking has found naturally varied terrain here, with technical routes linking the hinterland to the coast by exploiting the elevation changes and the lay of the land. Castel Gavone, the Del Carretto fortress perched above the hamlet, offers from its plateau a view that takes in both the coastal plain and the heights of the Ligurian Apennines.
Finalborgo is registered with the association of Italy's most beautiful villages (Borghi più belli d'Italia), a recognition that attests to the quality of its architectural heritage. But the reason it continues to draw a varied public — historians, climbers, hikers, caving enthusiasts — lies in the rarity of the combination: a well-preserved medieval urban core that serves as a logistical base for a natural landscape of remarkable complexity. The distance from the sea is enough to change the climate and vegetation, yet not enough to leave the hamlet isolated. It is this threshold position, between two distinct environments, that defines its nature.
