Cascate del Carpino di Carpinone

In the inland reaches of Molise, a few kilometres from Isernia, the town of Carpinone occupies a raised rock formation from which, over the centuries, the valleys of the Carpino and Cavaliere rivers could be watched. The borgo (historic village) has Lombard origins — dating back to around the seventh century — and the Caldora castle, which still stands over the historic centre today, is the most visible trace of that role of territorial control which justified the site's founding. But it is outside the walls, along the course of the Carpino river, that the landscape takes on a different dimension, quieter and less legible at first glance.

The waterfalls can be reached on foot from the historic centre in a few minutes, following paths that descend through the vegetation along the gorges carved by the river. The route runs alongside streams and small natural pools, crossing a wood where the tree cover is dense and continuous. The area is classified as an environmental asset and is listed among the sites recorded by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italian Environment Fund), with an address on Via Fiume. The classification is not merely formal: it reflects a degree of ecological integrity that, in this part of the southern Apennines, has been preserved thanks to the absence of large-scale tourist infrastructure.

The watercourse descends in successive drops, and the vegetation that accompanies it — shrubs, ferns, tall trees — maintains a constant humidity that changes the quality of the air even a short distance from the road. The area's high biodiversity is not an abstract fact: it can be felt in the variety of plant species that alternate along the trail, in the presence of distinct microenvironments that follow one another within a relatively small space. Those who walk these paths are mostly local hikers and enthusiasts of nature trekking, not organised crowds.

Carpinone remains one of the lesser-known destinations in Molise, a region that already occupies a marginal position in national tourism circuits. This condition has spared the area from the transformations that have altered similar landscapes elsewhere. The paths can be walked both by those seeking a more demanding hike and by those who prefer a slow walk, and in either case the Carpino river offers a constant sound and visual reference throughout the way.
