Sappada's Carnevale, known as Vosenòcht in the local Bavarian-derived language, is one of the oldest and most distinctive carnival traditions of the Italian eastern Alps. Traditional masks and communal rituals set it clearly apart from lowland carnivals.
Sappada lies in the upper Piave valley, on the border between Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto, at an altitude of over eleven hundred metres. The village has medieval Germanic origins and still preserves its own language, plodarisch, a variant of Old Bavarian that settlers likely brought with them between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This linguistic continuity is not a museum artefact: plodarisch is spoken in daily life by part of the community, and it forms the substratum within which the Vosenòcht — Sappada's Carnevale — took shape and has been handed down through the centuries.
The name of the festival itself belongs to that language: Vosenòcht designates the night, or the time, of ritual folly, a temporal space in which the community suspends ordinary hierarchies and re-enacts them through codified masks. The central figure is the Rollate, a character dressed in animal hides and hung with heavy cowbells. The noise produced by its movements has a precise function within the pre-Christian agrarian rites the mask evokes: driving away winter spirits and urging the earth to awaken. This is not a modern folkloric reconstruction, but a practice that has passed through centuries of Alpine history without losing its essential structure.
The Vosenòcht procession winds through the contrade (hamlets) of Sappada — the plodn, the separate settlement clusters that make up the village — following an order that is itself part of the rite. The masks move in groups, observing roles handed down within families and the community. Transgression is permitted, but within limits recognised by everyone: it is a codified transgression, one that strengthens the social fabric rather than tearing it apart. This balance between freedom and rule is one of the traits that set Sappada's Carnevale apart from lowland carnivals, where spectacle tends to prevail over community.
What makes the Vosenòcht a case study within the panorama of Italian Alpine traditions is its position on the border — geographic, linguistic, cultural. Sappada belongs fully neither to the Friulian area nor to the Venetian one, and its carnival tradition cannot be traced back to either context. It is instead closer, in structure and spirit, to the traditions of the German-speaking valleys of Tyrol and the eastern Alpine arc. This otherness has not remained isolated: the Sappada community has maintained ties with other German-speaking villages in the Alps, building over time a network of cultural affinities that crosses administrative borders.
