Calice Ligure

In the inland hills of the province of Savona, a handful of kilometres from the coastline that gathers all the attention in summer, Calice Ligure occupies a hilltop plateau between chestnut woods and olive groves. The municipality counts just over a thousand residents, sits at an altitude of around two hundred metres above sea level, and preserves an urban layout that still bears the marks of a medieval Ligurian borgo (historic village): narrow carruggi (alleyways typical of Ligurian old towns), houses set close together, and a parish church dedicated to San Martino overlooking the historic core. On the surface, nothing sets it apart from the many minor centres of the Savona hinterland. And yet Calice Ligure has built, over time, a precise and recognisable identity that owes nothing to the sea.

The village's artistic vocation is not a recent label applied for promotional ends, but the result of a long-standing presence of painters, sculptors and ceramicists who, from the second half of the twentieth century onward, chose these spaces as a place to work and live. That presence has left concrete traces: art galleries scattered through the fabric of the village, creative workshops still active today, and above all the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Casa del Console (Museum of Contemporary Art), which brings together works tied to the cultural history of the borgo and the community of artists who gravitated around it. The institution's name refers to a historic building in the centre, converted into an exhibition space without losing its original architectural character.

What sets Calice Ligure apart among Ligurian villages is the coherence between form and content: not an isolated museum in an otherwise indifferent setting, but an entire village that has turned artistic production into a widespread, everyday practice, visible in painted façades, in shared spaces, in the way residents have absorbed and, in part, sustained this presence. The Savona hinterland provides the context — silence, low raking light, distance from the seasonal noise of the coast — and the village has managed to turn it into a condition favourable to creative work, rather than a merely decorative backdrop.

This trajectory places Calice Ligure in a rare category: places that have acquired a cultural function without giving up their nature as a living community. The borgo is neither an open-air museum nor a planned exhibition hub, but an inhabited centre that has allowed a relationship between art and territory to settle over time.
