A nessuno realmente importa se la pizza é stata pluripremiata ed a nessuno importa se il ristorante é uno di pochi in Europa e nel mondo con un titolo di studi made in Messico (hecho en México) in Alta Cucina.

Però riserviamo a buon intenditori uno spazio, nel centro storico di Catania in una delle vie più emblematiche della città, dei tavoli, in una cornice di pietra (dall’atmosfera mistica), un tavolo dei 12 presenti (per un totale di 60 posti a sedere).

Il menù é fatto da winners (piatti che si vendono realmente in Messico) e da pizze fatte con un forno a legna che come nel panificio che nasceva giusto in un questo locale fa rivivere in tutto il vicinato, la magia degli anni 30’.

Infine il nome “La Calavera”, questo teschio messicano che non è nessun culto dedicato alla morte, ma è bensì una forma di democrazia.

Noi siciliani e noi di Catania siamo cresciuti con la festa dei morti (días de los muertos) e accompagnavamo e salutavamo i nostri cari ricordandoli con un sorriso e del buon vino, mangiando con gusto.

La Calavera é un posto di tradizione.

La Calavera é democrazia, alto, ricco, povero, grosso, magro, muscoloso, bello e brutto, tra cent’anni tutti saremo uguali (beddi tisi tisi).

Qui c’è spazio per tutti e non esiste distinzione ne discriminazione di razza, sesso, religione, preferenze sessuali.

Qui c’è Mezcal, Sangria, Cockteleria Classica e D’Autore, Corona ed un buon Tequila.

Questo locale si formerà e plasmerà anche alla richiesta di amici (perché il cliente in questo locale é un amico che rispetta questo posto come se fosse casa sua).

I am so excited to open my new restaurant in Haslemere and I look forward to serving you some of my family favourites and some classic Italian dishes soon.

I have over 20 years experience in managing and working in the catering industry both as an importer and exporter of fine foods from Italy and as a restaurateur in London. I felt it was time to take life a bit easier and start up something for me and my family. The experience I gained from working at United Colours of Benetton and launching Boscoreale, a restaurant which I have now sold, has given me the foundation to start something smaller and more intimate.

My passion is food, family and good company. I look forward to welcoming you to Carlo Independent Italian Restaurant soon and for us to laugh and love food together.

The Coach House Restaurant

Once a Coach house to the nearby Manor, this hidden restaurant tucked away in the grounds of the Garden Centre has an old world charm all of its own and has been a favourite for  discerning diners for nearly thirty years.

A wide choice of excellent dishes are on the menu with our produce fresh from the market daily. Our fine wine list complements the menu perfectly, and a special two-course menu is available at lunchtimes.

Ruxley Manor Garden Centre, within which lies The Coach House restaurant.

Way back in 1080, William the Conqueror gave the land at Rokesle, as it was then known, to his half-brother, Odo, Bishop of Baieux. He rented this out to a certain Malgerius who assumed the name Malgerius of Rokesdale. At that time, eight knights commanded by William were given the task of defending Dover Castle and Malgerius did his annual twenty-day stint.

To this day, you still enter Dover Castle through the Ruxley gate.

Down the ages, various families have occupied the Manor House. Gregory de Rokesdale became Lord Mayor of the City of London from 1274 to 1285, this being perpetuated in a tablet on the wall of Lloyds Bank in Lombard Street. The present house dates from the 17th Century with later additions, although some of the interior is probably 15th or 16th Century.

To the right of the house is a large Mulberry tree which goes back to between 1610AD and 1615AD, when it was decreed in James 1st time that all landowners should be encouraged to produce silk. However, silkworms only enjoyed white mulberries and, unfortunately, the blue variety was planted.

Today, the Manor House has been converted into a Children’s Day Nursery under the name of Grace’s, she being the last member of the family to live there.
