The place
Since 1895 Cooperativa Artieri Alabastro of Volterra has carried forward the ancient art of alabaster working, handed down since Etruscan times. Declared an Impresa storica d'Italia (Historic Italian Business), the cooperative brings together master craftsmen who transform this luminous stone into works of contemporary design, sculptures, lamps, objects and furnishing accessories. The name itself, Artieri, was coined by Gabriele D'Annunzio during his visit to Volterra in 1908.
The origins
Cooperativa Artieri Alabastro was founded in 1895 as Società Cooperativa Industriale Magazzino di lavori in alabastro. Volterra has preserved the tradition of alabaster working since Etruscan times.
