At two thousand one hundred metres, where the Val Venosta opens into an amphitheatre of peaks, the Tarscher Alm is, from May to October, the recognisable stopping point among the trails: a threshold of stone and wood separating the effort of walking from the warmth of the refuge.
Trail number one climbs for four kilometres through forest and clearings up to the refuge door: those who arrive on foot bring with them seven hundred metres of ascent and the reward of a well-earned rest. Those who prefer the chairlift set off from one thousand one hundred and seventy-four metres and reach the height in eighteen minutes, without missing out on the view.
Inside, the refuge's dining room welcomes hikers and cyclists with the warmth of a high-altitude stop: the mountain kitchen offers hot dishes and the traditional South Tyrolean Marend, that hearty snack which in Val Venosta rounds off every good day on the trails. An interior that smells of wood and alpine cooking.
From the refuge's kitchen come the dishes that accompany the hiking season, from May to October: the kitchen works for those coming down from the Gran Ladro and the area's peaks, for the bikers riding the local trails, for anyone in need of warmth and sustenance before heading back down to the valley.
