On the shores of Lake Como, among the Alps that press in on Dongo from three sides, an ancient craft survives that few still know how to practise: caring for the bronze bells that mark the hours above the churches and villages of half of Italy. Since 2019, SpiMAC has carried it out with passion and artisan skill.
Every bell tower is a construction site suspended between sky and stone. SpiMAC works on historic bell frames through conservative restoration: the wooden or metal structures that have held the bells for centuries are reinforced without altering their original construction logic, restoring integrity to mechanisms that mark time for entire towns.
Precision is the first tool of the trade. SpiMAC tunes bells of any size — in the tower or in the workshop — bringing the whole bell ensemble to a hundredth-of-a-tone pitch: every bronze finds its place in the collective harmony, and the result is a sound that jars neither in physics nor in the memory of those who have listened to it for generations.
With ladders strapped to the roof rack and equipment on board, SpiMAC reaches bell towers to install automation systems with advanced remote programming and management. On the same visit, if needed, supply and repair of tower clocks: everything that measures a community's time, cared for by a single expert hand.
When the bell tower rings out as it should once more, SpiMAC's work is already invisible — and that is exactly how it should be.
