On Locarno's Piazza Grande, where every summer the cinema turns the buildings into open-air stage sets, Ristorante Cantina 1896 has carried forward a story of Ticino cuisine and a passion for wine since 1896. Founded in 1896 in what is today the beating heart of Locarno, the Cantina has crossed more than a century without losing the thread of its own identity. The entrance at Piazza Grande 26 is already a statement: you step into a place that knows the difference between fashion and character, and has chosen the latter for more than a hundred and twenty years, since the days when the square was already the centre of city life.
The dining room extends onto the terrace overlooking the square, where during the Locarno Film Festival and Moon&Stars the tables fill with a city in celebration. The same space welcomes private celebrations — birthdays, anniversaries, corporate events, aperitifs — in a setting able to shift register without losing its warmth, from the midday break to an evening built to measure.
From the kitchen come the authentic flavours of Ticino tradition — pasta, meat, dishes rooted in local memory — and the pizza with its special dough, which comes up again and again in reviews as the house's most recognisable dish.
