On the Statale Adriatica, at kilometre 483, the Costa dei Trabocchi (the Trabocchi Coast) yields a stretch of cliff to an osteria born from a true story: decades ago a whale ran aground here below, and from that day the sea has never stopped being the protagonist.
The sign carries the name of a founding event: more than forty years ago, on the cliff below, a young whale ran aground. A local farmer opened a kiosk, began frying the day's catch and pouring wine. From that improvised stall came today's restaurant, faithful heir to a simple gesture: bringing the sea to the table with nothing in between.
In summer the terrace opens onto the view of the Costa dei Trabocchi: forty covers facing the Adriatic, where the line between landscape and meal grows thin. Eating here means sitting inside the view itself, the water shifting colour from lunchtime to sunset, the wind carrying the smell of salt air between the tables.
The kitchen is run by two brothers, Camillo and Giuseppe, joined by local women who cook as they would at home. Giuseppe honed his technique in some of the finest restaurants in Abruzzo before returning to the coast. The result is a menu that moves between raw seafood and calamari al sale nero (squid in black salt), homemade pasta, brodetto di pesce (fish stew) and traditional sweets such as nevole ortonesi.
A cucina di mare (seafood cuisine) rooted in its place, a story worth the journey: the page tells everything the view leaves unsaid.
