In Catanzaro's Siano district, a workshop preserves an ancient gesture made contemporary: Francesco Scarpino, maestro d'Arte (master craftsman), carves fine woods and experiments with techniques that blend organic matter and coloured resins, turning every piece into a one-of-a-kind object, rigorously made by hand and never replicated in series.
On the workbench lie the materials of each creation: woods selected for grain and density, coloured resins that Scarpino blends and layers with calibrated precision. The Siano workshop is where raw matter meets technique, and where every choice of wood — fine or common — already determines the character and weight of the object to come.
Francesco Scarpino's hands move with the precision of someone who has turned craftsmanship into a rigorous discipline: every carving follows the grain of the wood, using sharp tools and timescales unknown to mass production. The title of maestro d'Arte (master craftsman) is not honorary but descriptive: it speaks of years of practice applied to a technique in constant experimentation.
The finished pieces of Iointagliolegno reveal the breadth of this research: handcrafted pens made from pine cone wood, finished with 14-carat gold lacquering, or pieces that set coloured resins against the natural grain of the wood. Every object is rigorously made by hand, with no serial production: the shop's shelf changes composition with each new season of work and experimentation.
From the shop window in Siano, each piece awaits someone able to recognise the work hidden within the wood and resin. The full page completes the story.
