In the hinterland of Vibo Valentia, where the Calabrian hills slope down toward the Tyrrhenian Sea, Frantoio Mafrica (olive mill) has been working the olive tree for three generations. Since 1950, more than ten thousand trees spread across over a hundred hectares have produced an extra virgin olive oil that carries within it the memory of a landscape and of a precise method.
The groves stretch across more than a hundred hectares of Calabrian hillside, dotted with over ten thousand trees. Not generic varieties: Ottobratica and Ciciarello, native cultivars of the Vibo Valentia area, rooted in this soil for centuries and selected to yield an oil of unmistakable character. Every tree carries the name of a territory, a story that precedes the olive mill itself and shapes it over time.
The estate is felt, first of all, as space: more than a hundred hectares where the countryside never seems to end, to be explored on foot along country paths. Horses and donkeys share the property with the olive trees, and the estate welcomes visitors for stays, guided tours and tastings. A place meant for those who want to pause and rediscover the rhythm of a still-living land.
After the harvest, the olives enter a highly automated facility and are processed at low temperature: a choice that preserves the polyphenols, the aromas and the varietal character of the cultivars. The result is an oil that has yielded nothing to industrial processing, keeping intact the aromatic signature of the Ottobratica and Ciciarello that compose it.
