Pantelleria, a volcanic island in the Sicilian Channel, carries in the name of each vineyard the memory of an ancient landscape. In Scauri, on the southern side, Salvino Gorgone tends three hectares of alberello pantesco (Pantelleria's traditional low bush-vine training system) from which a single label of Passito DOC has been made since 2000.
Three hectares of alberello vines, the training method Pantelleria has handed down for centuries against the scirocco wind. Every row carries the choice of someone who decided not to grow beyond measure: these vineyards yield just over eight thousand bottles a year, the entire production the winery allows itself.
Since 2000, Salvino Gorgone has chosen not to multiply labels: just one, the Passito di Pantelleria DOC, named after the area the grapes come from — Dietro L'Isola. A choice of identity before one of market, which has built over time a solid recognition among enthusiasts of Pantelleria's wine.
Eight thousand bottles a year, not one more: this is the limit the winery has set for itself, and it defines the character of a niche production. Passito di Pantelleria is made through the slow raisining of grapes under the island's sun, a process that takes time and cannot be rushed without losing something essential.
Dietro L'Isola opens its cellar to visitors: a direct way to meet Salvino Gorgone and understand, up close, what it means to make wine on Pantelleria.
