At the Maxwehr, where the Isar flows slowly beneath the medieval skyline of Landshut, the entrance to Freiraum is a discreet threshold between the city and a corner of Italy. Café, bistro and lounge merge into a single space that opens from morning until evening, seven days a week, with the rhythm of a Mediterranean promenade.
The bright, airy rooms look out over the river: this is where Italian cooking tells its story through original traditional recipes — bruschette, fresh pasta, antipasti — alongside a selection of Italian wines. At lunch the menu unfolds in three courses, a complete stop in the heart of the old town.
In the kitchen, ingredients arrive fresh from the market, seasonal, chosen according to what the Viktualienmarkt has to offer. The in-house pastry kitchen bakes its own sweets every day: the Törtchen (little tarts) that appear in the display case alongside the espresso specialties are made in-house, not brought in from outside.
