Portoferraio, facing the Tyrrhenian behind its Medici-era walls and a harbour that never quite stops moving, holds in its old town a place the island has known for more than forty years. Bar Elba is one of those spots that need no introduction: you find it by word of mouth, and then you keep coming back.
In the heart of Portoferraio's old town, steps from the harbour that has watched generations of islanders and travellers come and go, there's a doorway the locals know by heart. Bar Elba has stood here since 1983, and in more than forty years it hasn't stopped being the reference point of Via Garibaldi.
Behind the counter, Arcangelo and his wife have long been something of an institution: ask the regulars, the ones who walk in without glancing at the menu because they already know what they want. A coffee, a Campari, a tramezzino (soft triangular sandwich). The counter is the heart of the place, and whoever steps up to it is welcomed like someone the house already knows.
What's on offer is the Mediterranean bar in its most honest form: small bites prepared for aperitivo, well-made tramezzini, ice-cold beer when the sun bears down. In 2023, forty years in business were celebrated with music and Campari, with locals filling the place the way they would a family party.
