San Fele

San Fele stands at 864 metres above sea level in the province of Potenza, in the northern part of Basilicata, in an area that historically fell within the Valle di Vitalba (Vitalba Valley). The houses cluster together on a ridge between two mountains, following the hilltop morphology typical of many settlements in the Lucanian Apennines. The name derives from the original Santo Felice, contracted over time first into Santo Fele and then into its current form. Today the municipality has around three thousand residents, known as sanfelesi, and its economy rests on agriculture and a rural tourism that remains modest in numbers and confined to certain seasons.

The figure who links San Fele to the wider history of the Church is Saint Justin de Jacobis, born here in 1800, a Vincentian missionary beatified in 1975 by Paul VI and canonised by John Paul II in 1975 — one of the few saints native to northern Basilicata. But the place of worship that most deeply roots the village in regional popular devotion is the Santuario di Santa Maria di Pierno (Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Pierno), considered among the oldest and most historically layered in Basilicata. Its presence in the area is not merely architectural: over the centuries it has gathered devotional practices, pilgrimages and rites belonging to that borderland between official faith and oral tradition which Basilicata has preserved with particular tenacity.

The landscape surrounding the village completes the picture with a natural feature of note. The Cascate di San Fele (San Fele Waterfalls), formed by the streams that run down the Apennine slopes, can be reached along paths that cross woods and little-frequented valleys. Water, woodland and stone form a coherent system here, inseparable from the history of the place: for centuries these resources have shaped the local economy and the very form of human settlement. To observe the waterfalls is also to read the territory in its layers, not only in its visible surface.

San Fele remains a municipality that mass tourism has not yet reached in any structural way. This condition is neither a merit nor a limitation in itself, but a fact that still allows the village to be perceived in its ordinary measure: the rhythm of the seasons, the continuity of devotional practices, a landscape that has not been rearranged for display. For those travelling through inland Basilicata with an eye for the traces of material culture and popular religiosity, San Fele offers precise, verifiable references rather than staged scenery.
