The beach of Sottomarina, the seaside district of Chioggia, is known for the therapeutic properties of its sand, traditionally used for natural wellbeing treatments linked to heat and minerals.
Sottomarina is the seaward extension of Chioggia, separated from the historic centre by the port canal and reached by a short bridge. It is not a seaside resort born of touristic ambition, but a strip of land that has stood alongside the life of a fishing community for centuries, gradually acquiring a summer following without ever fully losing its character as a place lived in before it was visited. The shoreline runs for several kilometres to the south, with a wide, regular beach facing the northern Adriatic, where the water deepens slowly and stays shallow for a considerable stretch.
The tradition of therapeutic sand treatment belongs to this beach across generations. The practice consists of lying on the dry sand during the hours of strongest sun, letting the heat gathered in the grains work deep into the muscles and joints. The sand of the northern Adriatic, and in particular that of the Chioggia coastline, is considered well suited to this use for its fine grain and its ability to retain heat evenly and for a long time. It is not a medical protocol codified in the modern sense, but a custom handed down locally, practised above all by those seeking relief from rheumatic pain or chronic muscular fatigue, which coexisted for decades with ordinary bathing without ever being formalised into dedicated facilities.
The context in which this tradition has been preserved is essential to understanding it. Chioggia is a lagoon city with a centuries-old history bound to fishing and maritime trade, distinct from Venice in character and economy, and Sottomarina represents its Adriatic-facing side: less monumental, more directly exposed to the open sea, with a daily rhythm still marked by the tides and by port activity. The Venice lagoon, which opens to the north, carries with it a deposit of sediments and minerals that shapes the composition of the sands along the southern Venetian coast differently from the beaches further north in the Veneto.
What remains of this tradition today is partly a living memory among the beach's regular visitors, and partly a spontaneous practice still observed in the middle hours of the day, when the summer sun brings the sand to high temperatures. There are no formalised facilities for sand treatment in Sottomarina in the sense that exist, for instance, at certain spa resorts. The therapy, if it can be called that, takes place outdoors, on the open beach, with the same simplicity it always has.
