Piana di Venafro

The Piana di Venafro opens where the middle valley of the Volturno widens its course between the foothills of the Matese massif and the hills that support the town of Venafro, in the province of Isernia. It is a broad valley floor, legible in its agricultural geometry, which the state road crosses without ceremony, leaving stretches of olive groves and cultivated fields on either side. The town's profile — bell towers, domes, the Castello Pandone — stands out against the slope of Monte Sant'Angelo like a backdrop that needs no seeking out: it is simply there, still, while the plain unfolds before it.

Olive cultivation is the dominant feature of this landscape. The native varieties found on the plain have roots going back to Roman times: Venafro was already celebrated in antiquity for the quality of its oil, so much so that Horace and Columella mentioned it explicitly in their writings. That continuity is not mere rhetoric: the olive groves scattered across the plain are in part centuries-old formations, with trees whose spreading canopies and twisted trunks mark the ground like fixed elements of a map that has remained substantially unchanged over the centuries.

The historical stratification of this territory does not end with the Roman era. During the Second World War, the Piana di Venafro was the theatre of military operations linked to the Gustav Line, the German defensive system that ran across central Italy. The presence of a French military cemetery in the surrounding area — the Cimitero Militare Francese di Venafro (French Military Cemetery of Venafro), which holds the remains of soldiers who fell between 1943 and 1944 — gives the plain a more recent dimension, one less frequented by collective memory.

What makes this landscape significant as an object of observation is precisely its measure: it is not a scenery built to be looked at, but a territory that has continued to function according to its own agricultural and settlement logic. The plain has not been turned into an attraction, and this keeps it in a state of direct legibility, where the relationship between the cultivated soil, the course of the Volturno and the surrounding relief remains perceptible without mediation.
