Woodworking in Forenza

Forenza is a village in the Apennines of Lucania, in the province of Potenza, sitting at around 900 metres of altitude among the hills of the Vulture-Melfese area. The territory has historically been shaped by an agro-pastoral economy that, over the centuries, forged a direct and necessary relationship with the resources of the surrounding woodland. Wood was not a material worked for ornament, but a tool for survival: from yokes for oxen to field implements, from milk containers to the simplest household furnishings.

In this context, artisanal woodworking has passed from generation to generation not as an art separate from daily life, but as a skill embedded in the rhythm of the seasons and of farm work. Forenza belongs to a network of villages in Lucania — among them Avigliano and Stigliano — where this tradition has maintained a continuity that has elsewhere been broken. Local artisans work with woods such as walnut, chestnut and cherry, found in the forests of the Potenza hinterland, using carving and turning techniques that owe little to industrial mechanisation.

What sets this production apart is not quantity or commercial visibility, but the coherence between material, gesture and context. The objects that come out of the workshops of Forenza still bear the recognisable marks of manual work: the surfaces are not uniform like those of mass production, and the shapes answer to precise functions rather than decorative trends. It is a subtle difference, but a measurable one to anyone who knows wood.

In recent decades, Basilicata has invested in recognising its artisan supply chains, folding them into regional promotion schemes. Within this picture, Forenza remains a minor node, far from the more frequented circuits, but for that very reason it preserves a practice still tied to its territorial origin, without the mediation of a tourist narrative superimposed on the craft.
