Brugnello

Brugnello is a hamlet in the municipality of Cerignale, in the province of Piacenza, perched on a rocky spur that drops sheer to the Trebbia below. At that elevation the river is already a fully formed watercourse: it carves narrow gorges, forms pools of an almost opaque green, and mirrors the wooded walls that press in on it from both sides. The village belongs to the Alta Val Trebbia (Upper Trebbia Valley), that stretch of the Apennines marking the border between four provinces — Piacenza, Genoa, Alessandria and Pavia — within the area known as the Appennino delle 4 Province (Four Provinces Apennines). Cerignale, the municipality it belongs to, counts just over a hundred registered residents, a number that shrinks further in the cold months. Brugnello is an integral part of it, its handful of houses built in local sandstone arranged along the promontory as if seeking balance between the emptiness of the valley and the solidity of the rock beneath.

The houses bear the marks of quiet care: worked doorways, paved paths decorated with floral motifs, details that speak of an attentiveness to place that has not entirely given way to the neglect seen in many Apennine villages of similar size. The stone used to build them is the same as the ground the village stands on, lending the whole a material continuity with the surrounding landscape. There is no sharp break between what was built and the rock itself: the walls seem to emerge from the promontory rather than having been laid upon it.

From the belvedere that opens onto the valley side, the view over the Trebbia is wide and vertical. The river runs far below, visible in glimpses through the vegetation. The ridges of the Piacenza Apennines line up in the distance without artificial interruption, in a landscape that holds a visual coherence hard to find in the region's more frequented areas. The municipality of Cerignale lies about 67 kilometres from the provincial capital, reached via the SS45 Piacenza-Genova road or the provincial SP 586 Marsaglia-Chiavari: short distances on paper, but ones that the terrain turns into a journey requiring care and time.
