The Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri-Lagonegrese documents and promotes a repertoire of ancient local trades — from weaver to coppersmith, from miller to saddler — that tell the story of Lucanian rural civilisation.
In the territory of the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri-Lagonegrese, between the slopes of Monte Volturino and the beech woods that descend toward the upper Agri valley, the memory survives of a working system that shaped the life of Lucanian villages for centuries. Marsico Nuovo, a municipality in the province of Potenza with a documented history dating back to pre-Roman times — the settlement of Abellinum Marsicum is mentioned by Pliny and dated between the 5th and 4th centuries BC — is one of the centres around which this intangible heritage has settled with particular continuity.
The Park has surveyed and documented a wide catalogue of craft figures and rural trades: tuff carvers, stonecutters, weavers and spinners, tinsmiths, coppersmiths, cauldron makers, saddlers, millers, muleteers, umbrella makers. Each of these figures occupied a precise place in the community's economy, answered concrete needs, and passed on technical knowledge orally and by hand, from workshop to workshop, from father to son. The umbrella maker (ombrellaio), for instance, was an itinerant trade: he travelled through the villages repairing and building umbrellas with metal frames and fabric, carrying minimal tools and a competence that today seems as remote as it is specialised.
What these figures share is a direct relationship with matter — wood, iron, wool, stone — and with the time needed to work it. The peasant and pastoral civilisation that shaped the Lucanian Apennines knew no separation between production and territory: the miller was tied to the watercourse, the saddler to transhumance, the weaver to the wool of the flocks that moved along the tratturi (drover's roads). Each trade was, in this sense, a way of reading the landscape even before being an economic practice.
The Park's work of enhancement restores this knowledge not as museum folklore but as a key to interpreting the territory. Those who walk the trails of the protected area or cross the villages of the district — Marsico Nuovo with its thirteen churches and noble palaces with stone portals, the lanes climbing toward the rocky outcrop — move through a landscape also built by these hands. The architecture, the paving, the domestic objects preserved in private homes still bear the marks of those who knew how to work the local stone or hammer copper into shape.
Documenting these trades means recognising that the landscape of the Lucanian Apennines is not only natural: it is the result of a long, technical human presence, which has left material and immaterial traces that are difficult to separate from one another.
